A Look at our Painting Classes

The summer is coming to an end and the school year is right around the corner. Above are some highlights from our painting class during the 2012 Summer Arts Camp. We currently have two groups in drawing and painting, our youngest artists, grade K-2, and rising artists in grades 3-5.

The above ice scream cone was painted by one of our rising artists, who used oil paint for the first time this summer. We recycled old vinyl wallpaper and created still life paintings against a wallpaper pattern.

Below this almost ready-to-eat ice cream cone is a "Cave Painting" created by one of our youngest artists. They made their own paint using earth pigments and egg yolk and depicted subjects reminiscent of early cave art: animals in motion, plants, and insects.

Enrollment is now open for our After School Painting Classes. The youngest group will be meeting on Tuesdays from 4-5:30pm, and the rising artists group will meet on Thursdays from 4-5:30pm. This fall, we are also offering an open painting class for grades 3-6 for those students that already have a busy after school schedule that will run on Saturday morning from 10:30am-noon.

The painting class covers most drawing and painting techniques such as pastels, watercolors, gouache, egg tempera, acrylic painting on canvas and more. Once or twice per session, we'll have a special workshop such mono prints, painted collages, Chinese brush painting, and other variations on drawing and painting.

A Look At Our Crafts Classes

With our Summer Arts Camp well underway,  we direct our attention to our Crafts classes.  Dinora Bock has been teaching Spanish and Crafts during our after school program, as well as a variety of crafts classes during the Summer Arts Camp.

This time around, we had a very special visitor: Mrs. Mergen! She talked about what it's like to live on a sheep farm, and showed us how to spin yarn out of pure sheep's wool. Each child received a hand-held spindle and a bit of wool with which to practice their spinning. We then tried to use some of that wool along with store bought wool for a weaving project. Some students chose to create a utilitarian object from their weaving such as the purse shown above.

We really try to focus on being kind to the environment. Some of our other projects included recycled paper making, marbling, and making decoupage birdhouses out of recycled soda bottles, shown above.

Mrs. Bock continues the crafts summer program with the currently running Sewing Camp! More pictures to come.

Enrollment is now open for the after-school Spanish and Crafts class where crafts such as sewing, weaving, and needlepoint will continue to be explored. The class will be running on Wednesdays during the school year. For more information or to sign up, please contact us at info@westphillyartstudio.com

Spring Art Show 2012

Our spring art show was a great success! This time around, we focused on collage using mixed paper and images from art history. Shown above is our "museum" project, in which students cut out images from art history and placed them in a painted museum environment. This project emphasizes size, scale, and interior perspective. The image below shows a mixed paper collage on the right and an acrylic painting from the same image on the left, emphasizing pattern and composition. Up next: pictures from our summer Arts Camp!

Fall 2011 News and Art Show

This fall we were happy to move to our new location at the Philadelphia Presbyterian Church in West Philadelphia. This means more facilities for our students and space for our art shows! Below are some photos from the first art show in our new space. Student worked in gouache, acrylic, and mixed media. We also introduced egg tempera painting, an ancient way to mix pigment using egg yolk as a natural binder. Students loved the process of breaking open an egg and watching the colors change!

Stay tuned for more scheduling information as we begin the New Year.
